Suez Prosecution authorities referred Wednesday four defendants to criminal court on charges of the manslaughter of a 17-year-old girl as a result of illegal female genital mutilation (FGM).

The defendants include the doctor who performed the surgery, the mother of the victim Mayar Mohamed, the anesthetist, and another hospital official, all of whom are evading arrest except for the mother who is in police custody, local media reported.

The Suez governor ordered in May that the private hospital be shut down after the young girl was reported dead while undergoing an FGM procedure due to severe bleeding. Her twin sister also underwent the same operation but survived.

The Ministry of Health and Population prepared a bill that suggests much stricter penalties on doctors and families involved in FGM.
