The Cairo Administrative Court adjourned on Monday its verdict on the lawsuit filed by Hisham Geneina’s lawyers, demanding the suspension of Geneina’s dismissal decision, to 5 September.
The lawsuit was filed against President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s decision, which the lawyers claim is “unconstitutional”.
However, in July 2015, Al-Sisi announced a new law that stipulates he has the right to dismiss heads of monitoring bodies. The law passed after the legislation committee in the State Council revised it, and it came into effect before the current parliament was formed.
Al-Sisi decided to dismiss Geneina from his post as head of the Central Auditing Organisation after the latter revealed an alleged EGP 600bn corruption scandal in 2015. The general prosecutor’s office released a statement saying that the numbers issued by Geneina were exaggerating the corruption, stating that he added numbers from previous years in his 2015 report.
Geneina had several conflicts with the Interior Ministry and Judges Club as neither were willing to disclose their budgets.
Geneina was accused of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood following his corruption report. He was appointed to his post in 2012 in the era of former ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
