Presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef denied that a suspected assassination plot is the reason President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi did not attend the Arab Summit in Mauritania.

Youssef told Daily News Egypt on Monday that the report published by private newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm was “not true”.

Al-Masry Al-Youm published a report citing unnamed sources that claimed the presidency had learned of an assassination plot that would target Al-Sisi should he attend the summit in Nouakchott.

The sources also claimed that this is not the first time Al-Sisi has been threatened by an assassination plot. Al-Masry Al-Youm claimed this led to Al-Sisi electing not to participate in the summit, which started on Monday.

Sources in the presidency told Daily News Egypt that the next visit on the president’s agenda is the G20 Summit in China on 4-5 September.
