The Egyptian Embassy in Berlin has contacted several officials in the German federal government about the reported death of an Egyptian citizen inside a prison in the city of Essen, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Tuesday.
The death of Mohammed Abdel Fattah was first reported by the man’s father during an interview on a privately-owned TV channel. He claimed that his son was tortured and killed without the Egyptian authorities being informed.
The family of the deceased have corroborated this information, saying that Abdel Fattah was severely tortured by German police officers.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the family Tuesday to examine Abdel Fattah’s documentation and latest correspondence.
The embassy in Berlin also earlier filed an official memorandum to the German foreign ministry for information about the incident as well as the circumstances of Abdel Fattah’s imprisonment and cause of death. Demands have been made as to why the embassy was not notified immediately.
The Egyptian ambassador to Germany has made further contact with the German ministries of foreign affairs, interior and the public prosecutor. German officials have promised immediate investigations into the incident and full coordination with the Egyptian Embassy in Berlin.
