Prosecution detains police officer to investigate murder of suspect

The Minya prosecution unit ordered Thursday the detention of a police captain from the Samalut police force on accusations of killing a suspect.

Police reports say the suspect has been involved in 25 criminal case.

The prosecution will investigate the incident and will listen to testimonies of civilian and security eyewitnesses on Monday.

Preliminary investigations shows that the police officer was roaming the streets when he found the suspect, chased him to his place of residence, and shot him dead. The report added that the victim was armed and exchanged fire with the police.

Civilian deaths at the hands of police personnel have been increasing in Egypt. Ninety-nine Egyptians were killed by police and the army, while 10 died in police stations and prisons, during the month of July, according to a report issued by El Nadeem Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence.
