Two police officers were killed, and three other police officers and two citizens were injured on Sunday morning in an attack that targeted a security checkpoint in Menoufiya governorate.

The attack took place at Al-Agizy checkpoint in Al-Sadat city when unidentified assailants opened fire at the security personnel, according to state TV.

The general prosecution ordered investigations into the attack, while police forces began a sweep of the surrounding area to look for the assailants.

Militant operations targeting police officers and the army have largely taken place in the turbulent North Sinai and away from the Nile valley governorates.

Islamic State-affiliate Sinai Province is believed to be responsible for planting IEDs to target army and police patrols, mainly in the cities of Al-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah in North Sinai.
