A police and army officer were killed in central Al-Arish city on Tuesday at dawn after anonymous militants opened fire on their vehicle, sources from inside Al-Arish city told Daily News Egypt on condition of anonymity.

The two officers were targeted by militants while they were in a private car in the centre of North Sinai’s Al-Arish city. No official statements have been issued by the Armed Forces or Interior Ministry regarding the attack.

However, state-run newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm reported that the two were police officers and were killed in an armed attack that targeted their armoured vehicle.

Military insurgency against army and police forces in North Sinai remains on the rise despite intensive military operations being carried out by the state targeting members of Islamic State-affiliate Sinai Province.

Sinai Province, formerly known as Ansar Beyt Al-Maqdis, represents a chronic headache to Egypt’s current regime as it continuously targets army and police members whom they consider “apostates” that must be killed.
