Egypt welcomed and supported the US-Russian deal on a nationwide truce and ceasefire in afflicted Syria, which was agreed on Friday. Egypt called on all parties to adhere to the truce to achieve a permanent ceasefire in all Syrian cities.

In an official statement issued on Saturday, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this truce will help end the humanitarian crisis in Syria that resulted from nonstop violence.

US secretary of state John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Friday a plan that may bring about a ceasefire in Syria. However, Kerry said that the implementation of this plan is dependent on the choice of the Syrian people.

The Syrian regime allegedly announced Saturday its support of the suggested ceasefire and truce, amid airstrikes in Aleppo.

Despite the announcement of a ceasefire plan, about 24 civilians were killed on Saturday in airstrikes on the city of Idlib. The plan aims to fight the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and all parties affiliated to it.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zaid previously said in an interview that there should be a prompt solution to the current political turmoil in Syria. However, the military solution is not effective.

Kerry added that this accord will help access to humanitarian aid to afflicted areas, such as Aleppo. Both the Syrian regime and the opposition have allegedly showed support of the accord plan.

The Syrian civil war was sparked during the Arab Spring in 2011, and armed political factions have been in conflict ever since. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, tens of thousands of Syrians are missing, detained, and killed each year amid severe political turmoil.
