Angelique Kerber is the new No.1 in the women’s professional tennis ranking. The US Open winner is the first German woman to top the list since Steffi Graf’s last reign ended in 1997.
The new rankings published by the Women’s Tennis Association on Monday confirmed what everybody had known since Serena Williams was beaten in last Thursday’s US Open semifinal: Angelique Kerber is now the top women’s player.
Kerber knocked off Williams by simply advancing to Saturday’s US Open final, but then went one better by beating Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to win the second Grand Slam of her career, after having won the Australian Open back in February.
Kerber leads the women’s ranking with 8,730 points, compared to 7,050 for Williams.
The Bremen native is the first German top the rankings since Steffi Graf’s last spell at the top ended in March 1997.
