The 2016 Junior World Modern Pentathlon Championships was held at Cairo International Stadium from 12-18 September, at which South Korea’s Sunwoo Kim and Guatemala’s Charles Fernandez were crowned this year’s champions.
Around 28 countries participated in the event this year, including Egypt, Italy, South Korea, Chile, Hungary, Great Britain, Belarus, Germany, Russia, Poland, Japan, France, and Guatemala. The championship is for players younger than 21.
The women’s competitions for the championship concluded on 16 September, with South Korean player Sunwoo Kim receiving the award for first place after earning a total 1,315 points.
Second place went to Italy’s Frnacesca Tognetti, thanks to her total points of 1,308. Coming in third was Sofia Serkina from Russia, who acquired 1,302 points.
For the Egyptians competing in the championship, Haidi Adel ranked 21st with 1,203 points, Sondos Abou Bakr ranked 29th with 1,178 points, and Salma Abdel Maksoud ranked 34th with 920 points.
In the team competitions, Italy won first place with a total 3,786 points. Second place went to Hungary with 3,729 points. And earning 3,668 points, Germany came in third place.
The Egyptian team came in ninth place, after it obtained 3,265 points.
On 17 September, the men’s competitions concluded in a ceremony that was attended by the undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Bahaa Hanafy, who attended on behalf of the minister, Khaled Abdel Aziz.
Guatemala’s Charles Fernandez won first place with 1,429 points. South Korea’s Wen Jet John came in second place with 1,418 points, and Russia’s Alexander Levanov in third place with 1,411 points.
On the Egyptian side, Sherif Yasser came in 10th place by acquiring 1,381 points, and Sherif Nazeer came in 19th place with 1,357 points.
As for the team competitions, the Russian team won first place with 4,082 points. Second place went to Italy, which accumulated 4,076 points. The South Korean team won third place with 3,977 points.
The Egyptian team ranked in fifth place with 3,817 points.
The relay competitions will be held on 18 September.
