Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya Martin Kobler discussed the situation in Libya and means to reach political solutions with Egypt’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Arab Affairs Tarek Al-Quony on Sunday.

Kobler stressed on the importance of communicating with Egypt during the negotiations, while Al-Quony said that the Libyan government should provide constitutional support to the Government of National Accord (GNA).

Kobler and Al-Quony discussed the political, security, and economic challenges that Libya may be facing. He also praised Egypt’s efforts in reaching a solution for the political turmoil in Libya.

During his visit, Kobler also met with Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday to discuss the results of the United Nations Peace Treaty that was signed in December 2015, which resulted in the establishment of the GNA. Aboul Gheit stressed during the meeting that there will be direct involvement from the Arab League in the Libyan situation.

In a press statement following his meeting with Aboul Gheit, Kobler said that he wants the different parties and political factions in Libya to resume negotiations in order to reach a permanent peace agreement.

He added that all the negotiations should be conducted in presence of surrounding states including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Italy.

The unrest in Libya has increased following the downfall of former Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Libya is now divided into several political factions, and the number of militants is significantly increasing.
