The prosecution appealed the court’s decision to release photojournalist Omar Adel, who has been held in prison for more than 45 days.
His lawyer, Ali Al-Halwany, told Daily News Egypt the court decided on his release during a consultation session after the defendant completed 45 days in detention—but the prosecution appealed it.
Al-Halwany said that the appeal session is to be decided within 45 hours, and expects it to be held on Tuesday.
This was not the first time the prosecution has appealed an release order for Adel. The prosecution previously appealed his first release order with EGP 1,000 bail on 2 October.
Adel was arrested at Ezbet El-Nakhl metro station on 26 August and was reported to be missing for the next few days until he reappeared on 31 August in El-Marg police station.
The photojournalist is facing charges of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organisation, hindering the law and the constitution, and possessing molotov cocktails.
Over the past week, 10 cases of violations against journalists during their work were documented by the local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Journalists Against Torture Observatory (JATO). The cases included three arrests, two cases of brief interrogation during the coverage of an event, and five cases of banning journalists from covering an incident.
