The Minster of Religious Endowment Mohamed Mokhtar warned Egyptian people against the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group in a statement on Friday, accusing them of treachery and spying.

This warning statement came following the “11/11 protest” which many have called for in protest of the deteriorated economic conditions and increasing price hikes. The state has reported that this protest to be held on 11 November, is being arranged by Brotherhood supporters.

Following the ouster of the Brotherhood regime in 2013, the ministry has been largely involved in the state’s war on terror. It has banned dozens of preachers and undertaken further measures to regulate religious speech in Egypt.

Egypt declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group two years ago, criminalising its activities. Several Brotherhood supporters are facing harsh prison sentences and others are held in pretrial detention.
