Egyptians are continuing their victories in the world of squash after Mohamed El-Shorbagy, Ramy Ashour, and Karim Abdel Gawad qualified for the 2016 Wadi Degla PSA World Men’s Squash Championship.
El-Shorbagy managed to qualify after he defeated his compatriot Ali Farag, with a score of 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-8) in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals, held this year in Cairo, witnessed another match between two fellow Egyptians Ashour and Dessouki. In the third game, although Dessouki performed well, he forfeited the match in objection to the referee’s decision. The match ended with the score of 3-0 (11-6, 17-15, 10-8).
Karim Abdel Gawad won against England’s Nicholas Matthew in the quarterfinals, with a score of 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-9).
Matthew expressed that the games between Egyptian and English squash players are very exciting as Egyptian style is quite different from the English one. “Of course, everyone in squash enjoys playing using an attacking style in the game, but the Egyptian style of play is far more aggressive and English players’ style is a bit more patient,” says Matthew.
Thursday’s semifinal matches will see El-Shorbagy face Abdel Gawad, while Ashour takes to the court against France’s Grégory Gaultier.
