The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) expressed its concern about the latest death and prison sentences handed to defendants in the “Libya returnees” case.
On Sunday, the Criminal Court sentenced two defendants to death, while four were sentenced to life in prison, and another eight received varying prison sentences.
The court acquitted two defendants.
The EIPR said that the verdict was based on the investigations of the National Security apparatus, noting that the trial witnessed several violations, such as the assault of the defendants and enforced disappearances.
The case goes back to 2014, when 13 individuals were arrested on charges of planning attacks during the referendum on the Constitution in January 2014, as well as attacking Christians, and planning attacks from Libya.
EIPR said that the investigations and case papers did not include any information to prove that the defendants were in Libya.
