Police officers will soon need to participate in human rights courses and lessons on how to deal with citizens. This comes after the Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar approved on Tuesday a preliminary cooperation protocol with the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR).
According to a statement published by the ministry’s Facebook page, several training sessions will be held in order to broaden their awareness of human rights standards.
The statement said that the ministry is adopting a strategy that is based on respecting human rights and that any individual violations committed will be met with legal actions as per the law and the Constitution.
The minister has asserted on various occasions that police violations are not endemic, representing the individual actions of the officers involved, and should not result in generalisations or blame being placed upon the ministry.
Reports of violations inside prisons and police stations have been on the rise; however, the police continues to deny these accusations.
Several human rights activists, organisations, and political parties have called on the ministry to investigate these violations against citizens and prisoners.
