The parliament’s Culture and Media Committee, headed by former information minister Osama Heikal, started discussing the press and media institutions law, known in the media as the unified media law.

Several media institutions prepared their comments regarding the law, which are currently being and forwarded to parliament for review. Head of the Press Syndicate Yehia Qalash delivered a letter to Heikal on Sunday, requesting that the parliament notify the syndicate about the law.

During the discussions, the committee listened to the Egyptian Radio and Television Union’s (ERTU) take on the law.

Heikal said that the committee has invited all members of the Higher Press Council and the Press Syndicate to attend the discussions.

The proposed law has been in the works for well over a year and reached the State Council in late May.
