Pakistani player Tayyab Aslam, ranked 65th internationally, was the one expected to win the 2016 Khoozestan Squash Association Shahid Daghayeghi Open. However, Kuwait’s Ammar Al-Tamimi, ranked 118th internationally, provided the upset when he was named the champion of the tournament, which concluded its events on 16 December.
Aslam exited the tournament at the semifinals after losing to France’s Auguste Dussourd, ranked 136th internationally, with a score of 3-1 (11-8/3-11/11-8/11-4).
At the final match, Al-Tamimi managed to defeat Dussourd with a score of 3-2 (8-11/11-9/6-11/11-2/11-8).
Al-Tamimi managed to qualify for the final after winning the semifinal against Pakistan’s Ahsan Ayaz. At the beginning of the match, Ayaz was leading by two games, where the results were 2-11 and 8-11. Afterwards, Al-Tamimi managed to win the following two games, where the results were 11-3 and 11-7. Thus, the match became 2-2. Al-Tamimi managed to win the decisive game, 11-7, which led to Al-Tamimi winning the entire match, with the end results of 3-2 (2-11/8-11/11-3/11-7/11-7).
The quarterfinals and the first round were an easy win for Al-Tamimi. At the quarterfinals, he managed to beat Iran’s Erfan Jamshidi, with a score of 3-0 (11-4/11-4/11-9). As for the first round, he managed to defeat Iran’s Navid Maleksabet with a score of 3-0 (11-7/11-8/11-9).
