Police forces affiliated to the South Sinai Security Directorate arrested on Monday a defendant accused of slaughtering a non-commissioned police officer on Sunday evening, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.
The non-commissioned police officer Ibrahim Abdel Maksoud, who is affiliated to El Tor city’s police station in South Sinai, was slaughtered with a knife on Sunday evening.
“The non-commissioned police officer has been slaughtered while he was on his way to his workplace in El Tor Police Station before the start of the match between both Morocco and Egypt. The 37-year-old non-commissioned police officer reached the public hospital severely injured, and then died,” a local journalist told Daily News Egypt on condition of anonymity.
Following the incident, the prosecution authorities launched investigations and allegedly managed to arrest the defendant, who was disguised as a veiled woman, as he was trying to escape. The defender, who is the owner of a shoe store, has been referred to investigations to reveal the motive behind the crime, Al-Ahram newspaper said.
The incident is believed to be based on personal motivations rather than the militant insurgency that is currently ongoing in the Sinai Peninsula since 2013 between Islamic State-affiliated “Sinai Province” and state security forces, the local journalist said.
