Anonymous militants on Saturday evening blew up an institute affiliated to Al-Azhar University, using improvised explosive devices (IED) in the city of Al-Arish in North Sinai, according to a North Sinai based journalist, who spoke to Daily News Egypt on condition of anonymity.

The militants, who are believed to be members of the Islamic State (IS)-affiliated group “Sinai Province”, planted explosives around the institute and detonated remotely. The ensuing explosion resulted in the destruction of numerous parts of the institute without any injuries or deaths, he explained.

Similarly, a state-run school in North Sinai’s city of Rafah was blown up on Friday evening by anonymous militants, in order to prevent security forces from  entering it and monitoring them.

The militants placed explosives inside of El Rasm school and remotely detonated them. The explosion resulted in massive destruction of parts of the school and made it liable to collapse, a North Sinai based journalist said.

“This school has been subject to artillery shelling during previous clashes between security forces, represented by army and police, who are facing the IS-affiliated militants. The artillery shelling that took place during this year resulted in the suspension of the school’s activity,” he noted.

Moreover, a conscript was killed on Saturday by bullets from a sniper, while he was stationed in one of the security checkpoints in the city of Al-Arish, state-run newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm reported.

The newspaper quoted anonymous security sources that indicated that anonymous militants attacked the security checkpoint of Lahfn and engaged in an exchange of fire with the stationed forces. The shooting resulted in the death of the conscript.
