The wave of increased car prices in 2016 has increased growth in the value of car sales, taking them to EGP 10.4bn after the car market achieved total sales worth EGP 44.4bn last year, compared to EGP 34bn in 2015.
The passenger car market sold more than 142,000 units—a 27% decline—compared to 195,500 cars sold in 2015.
Cars of a Korean origin came first with 46,100 sold cars since January 2016 until December of the same year, with a value of EGP 12.07bn.
Japanese brands came second with 40,689 sold units worth EGP 16.28bn, followed by European brands in third place with 19,500 sold cars worth EGP 6.3bn.
American brands sold 18,700 cars in 2016 worth EGP 4.88bn, occupying the fourth place amongst the highest selling brands in the Egyptian market.
Chinese brands came fifth with 16,600 cars—a growth of 1.8%—achieving a total value of EGP 3.4bn.
The passenger car market sold more than 195,500 cars in 2015, worth EGP 34bn.
Korean brands came in the lead by 58,00 sold units, followed by Japanese with 54,100 units, and European brands third with 42,600 units, while American brands sold 27,600 units in 2015, occupying the fourth place.
Chinese brands came fifth with 12,400 cars, then Asian brands represented by the Malaysian Proton, which sold 766 cars.
The New Nissan Sunny has stayed in the lead as the most sold Japanese car in Egypt, selling more than 12,000 in 2016 worth EGP 2.39bn.
Mitsubishi sold 7,189 units of the Lancer, occupying second place with EGP 1.7bn, followed by the Nissan Sentra, achieving sales of 4,829 cars worth EGP 1.2bn.
The Toyota Corolla came fourth with 4,203 sold cars worth EGP 1.6bn, then the Nissan Qashqai followed it with 2,761 sold units worth more than EGP 1bn.
The New Nissan Sunny also occupied the first place in the list of most-sold Japanese cars in Egypt in 2015 with EGP 1.6bn sales for 14,000 units. The New Sunny is considered the most popular car in Egypt.
The Mitsubishi Lancer achieved sales worth EGP 1.2bn in 2015, occupying the second place with 7,806 cars, while the Toyota Corolla came in third place with sales worth EGP 1.3bn and 6,365 sold cars.
The Nissan Sunny in its old model came fourth with 3,511 sold cars for EGP 396m, followed by the Suzuki Ciaz which sold 2,583 units for EGP 356m.
The Chery Tiggo has outperformed its Chinese counterpart, the Geely Emgrand 8, topping the list of most-sold cars in Egypt, where Tiggo sold 4,529 units for EGP 2.2bn in 2016.
The Geely Emgrand came second with 4,052 sold cars for EGP 512m, followed by the Chery Envy with 3,644 sold units and sales of EGP 559m.
The Brilliance V5 came fourth with 370 sold cars worth EGP 103m, followed by the Brilliance FSV with six units worth EGP 540,000.
The Geely Emgrand managed to sell 5,700 cars during the period from January 2015 to December of the same year, worth EGP 518m, topping the sales of Chinese brands.
The Emgrand is considered the most popular Chinese car in Egypt.
The Speranza Tiggo and the Speranza Envy maintained second and third place respectively, having made no sales throughout the last four months of 2015. Sales of the Tiggo ceased at EGP 263m after the sale of 1,969 cars, while the Envy sold 1,675 cars for EGP 134m.
The Brilliance V5 came in fourth place, selling 968 cars at the value of EGP 149m, followed by the Geely Pandino 1,300cc at EGP 39m, for 571 cars sold.
Opel Astra sells 3,882 cars at EGP 1.37bn
The Opel Astra maintained its position, leading the sales of European cars in Egypt in 2016 and registering sales of 3,882 units worth EGP 1.37bn.
During that period, the Opel Insignia was ranked second with 2,706 units sold worth EGP 1.46bn, followed by the Peugeot 301, which recorded sales of 1,549 cars worth EGP 271m.
The Škoda Octavia took the fourth spot on the list, recording sales of 1,101 cars valued at EGP 209m. The Renault Stepway followed in fifth with 1,025 cars worth EGP 184m.
The Renault Logan occupied its place atop the bestselling list in Egypt in 2016, surpassing the Škoda Octavia, which had led the market since the beginning of 2015.
There were more than 10,000 Renault Logan models sold worth EGP 981m, while 5,154 Škoda Octavia models sold in the same period, worth EGP 978m. The Renault Stepway sold 4,183 cars, totaling EGP 522m.
The Opel Astra dropped to fourth place, registering sales of 2,580 units worth EGP 529m, while the Peugeot 301 took fifth place with sales of 2,175 units at EGP 247m.
Chevrolet Aveo tops list of most US cars sold in Egypt
The Chevrolet Aveo topped the list of most US cars sold in Egypt, achieving sales of EGP 683m with 3,698 cars.
The GP52 came second with sales of 3,457 cars worth EGP 729.7m, followed by the Lanos with sales of 3,449 units valued at EGP 508m.
The Jeep Renegade occupied the fourth position by selling 2,008 cars worth EGP 763m, and the Chevrolet Cruze sold 2,006 units worth EGP 393m.
The Chevrolet Lanos topped the US list instead of the Aveo during 2015, and achieved sales of 8,359 cars worth EGP 731m.
The Chevrolet Aveo occupied the second position with sales of 8,260 cars worth EGP 902m, while Chevrolet Optra maintained the third position on the list by registering sales of 3,506 cars estimated at EGP 438m.
The Chevrolet Cruze occupied the fourth place through selling 2,524 cars worth EGP 386m, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee that registered sales of 1,467 units worth EGP 1.1bn.
Verna sold 11,200 cars in 2016
The Hyundai Verna topped the list of bestselling Korean cars in Egypt by recording sales of 11,200 units in 2016 at a value of EGP 1.7bn, as the Verna is considered the cheapest Korean car in Egypt and locally assembled in the Ghabbour factory.
The Hyundai Tucson occupied the second position by selling 7,729 cars worth EGP 3.05bn, followed by the Hyundai Elantra HD that sold 5,088 units worth EGP 1.3bn.
The Elantra AD occupied the fourth position with sales of 3,770 cars worth EGP 1.2bn, and then the Kia Cerato, selling 3,665 units worth EGP 879m.
The Hyundai Verna has topped the list in 2015, and registered sales of EGP 1.9bn from 21,000 units.
The Hyundai Elantra jumped to the second position instead of the Hyundai IX35 by sales of 6,801 cars estimated at EGP 1.1bn, and the Hyundai IX35 in the third place with sales of 6,377 cars worth EGP 1.5bn.
The Kia Sportage occupied the fourth place with sales of 4,379 cars at a value of EGP 1.01bn, followed by the Kia Cerato, which sold 3,822 units at a value of EGP 622m.
