Green energy and prisons aren’t exactly two ideas that appear to fit naturally together. But inmates at a jail on the Caribbean island of Grenada are learning how to turn dung into energy as part of their rehabilitation.Project goal: Installing biogas units in Grenada with the long-term aim of expanding the project to other Caribbean islands
Project implementation: 10 biogas units to be subsidized and installed during the pilot phase. People on the island will also be trained to install the systems
Project partner: German development agency GIZ, Ökobit, and the International Climate Initiative
Project financing: The GIZ is providing 80,000 euro (86,952 dollars)
The Caribbean island of Grenada off the coast of Venezuela is trying to reach its green energy goals using an innovative approach. Working together with Germany, farmers are installing and learning how to maintain biogas systems with the help of small loans. The Richmond Hill prison is also getting in on the action – inmates are learning how to work with the biogas systems for use on the jail’s farm as part of their rehabilitation.
