NAT proposes tender to demolish buildings obstructing Metro Line 3

The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has proposed a general tender for contracting companies to demolish the buildings obstructing the implementation of the third phase of Metro Line 3, which includes four stations: Nasser, Maspero, Zamalek, and Kit Kat, according to an official source at the NAT.

The NAT had previously assigned the contract for supply and installation of the automatic fair collection (FAC) of phase three of the third line to French Thales Group.

Additionally, the NAT had also assigned the contract for the implementation of rail works for the third metro line to the ETF-ORC-TSO alliance, as the NAT favoured that bid over one by French company Colas Rail.

The NAT’s plan is to implement six new metro lines by 2032, in order to link Greater Cairo with all of its suburbs. The authority works on accelerating the implementation of the new subway lines to be completed ten years earlier before the planned deadline.

The implementation of the metro’s fourth line began in January. The working plan includes closing parts of Haram Street for three consecutive years until 2019, in order to move facilities and change traffic paths in the area. This underground line, 18km in length, will start from El-Malek El-Saleh Street and will reach the outskirts 6th of October City, passing by Giza Square, Haram Street, and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The NAT will implement new projects with a total length of 55km, including metro tunnels, in the next three years. The metro transports more than 4 million passengers a day in both its major lines: El-Marg-Helwan and Moneeb-Shubra, in addition to the finished part of the third line, which includes five stations.
