Bayern Munich have filled the vacant role of assistant coach, appointing former defender Willy Sagnol. The Frenchman joins on a two-year deal after Paul Clement departed for Premier League side Swansea in December.Willy Sagnol has returned to Bayern Munich on a two-year deal as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant coach.

The 40-year-old, who made 184 appearances for Bayern between 2000 and 2009, has management experience having coached French league side Bordeaux from 2014 until last year.

“It is a big honor for me that Carlo Ancelotti, one of the most experienced coaches in world football, decided to pick me. I am happy to be able to work by his side,” Sagnol said as part of Bayern’s announcement.

Bayern’s assistant coach role has been vacant since Paul Clement left last December to take charge at Swansea City in the English Premier League.

Last season, Ancelotti had his son Davide next to him on the bench. Club stalwart and assistant coach Hermann Gerland has left the bench to become manager of Bayern’s youth academy.

Former France defender Sagnol, who speaks English, German and Italian in addition to his mother tongue, has been appointed after ex-Bayern captain Mark van Bommel had reportedly already turned the job down.
