The armed forces said Friday that they killed three militants in North Sinai amid ongoing military operations fighting terrorism. One more person was arrested, the military spokesperson said.

This comes as a citizen in Al-Arish was reportedly shot dead on Thursday. Militants apparently stormed his house and killed him in front of his family, media reported.

The victim was identified as Ayman Zaki Sanad, a man in his mid-forties.

According to a Cairo-based Coptic activist, the man wasn’t Coptic, but is rather believed to have been killed for having links with security forces, by militants affiliated to the so-called Islamic State.

Militants have targeted Coptics in Al-Arish city in the past months for similar crimes, pushing nearly a hundred families out of the city in February, demanding protection from authorities.

The situation in North Sinai has witnessed instability since the ouster of former Islamist president

Mohamed Morsi and the end of the Muslim Brotherhood regime.
