Three years on, the Cairo Criminal Court postponed the trial of 48 defendants to 29 July in the case of violent protests in which journalist Mayada Ashraf was killed, state-media reported.
The court held the first trial session for 48 defendants in September 2015, accusing them of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and holding an illegal armed assembly targeting citizens, journalists, and police.
Ashraf was killed during violent protests back in March 2014, with a gunshot to the head while covering protests that had erupted in the Ain Shams district of Cairo. A child was also killed, and a Coptic woman was beaten to death in the events. There were clashes between security forces and protesters.
Ashraf’s case had raised controversy regarding the safety of field reporters.
