The governor of Marsa Matrouh, Alaa Abu Zeid, and the Indian ambassador to Egypt, Sanjay Bhattacharyya, inaugurated on Sunday a joint solar electrification project in Agaween village in Matrouh governorate.

The project involves providing a total of 8.8 KW of power using solar energy to electrify the entire village, including 40 houses, a school, a mosque, and a community centre, through connecting 40 lighting units reliant on solar energy, each producing 150 watts, according to Abu Zeid.

The Indian government has provided all the solar panels, sub-systems, machinery, equipment, technical support, and technicians’ training in the project. The role of the Egyptian government in this joint project involved providing and preparing the location for the implementation of the project.

“The project utilizes the solar energy in Egypt and enriches the lives of villages. It is also a demonstration of India’s technical capabilities, especially in renewable energy. It can be replicated in other locations in Egypt,” said the Indian ambassador.

Over the past two years, several projects were implemented in the sector of electricity in the city of Matrouh, where the largest solar energy plant was inaugurated in Siwa Oasis with capacity of 10.4 MW, with support from the United Arab Emirates’ government, according to Matrouh’s governor.
