The Administrative Prosecution ordered on Sunday of investigating what appeared on social media videos to be child abuse in an orphanage in Upper Egypt city of Luxor, according to state-owned media.
A video was circulated on social media last week of young girls speaking of how they were abused and showing off alleged abuse marks on their bodies.
In a similar context, the Administrative Prosecution also ordered investigations of an incident reported through a video that was also circulated on social media, where a father was protesting a hospital’s refusal to treat his nine-month daughter in Ismailia, resulting in her death.
Several orphanages were closed in Egypt over the past few months after reported torture and abuse cases surfaced.
In January, the Ministry of Social Solidarity announced the closure of an orphanage, after a five-minute footage circulated on social media revealing possible child abuse.
The footage had the sound of a child screaming and asking a woman, who was later proven to be one of the employees in the orphanage, not to be bathed in cold water. The video was filmed from a window by one of the neighbourhood’s residents.
Moreover, in March, other photos were circulated on social media showing alleged that at least a dozen children were reported to have been beaten, burnt, and sexually abused. The Ministry of Social Solidarity dissolved the orphanage’s board council and replaced it with a new administration.
