The quarterly report of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) showed an increase in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 3.6% during the second quarter (Q2) of this year to reach EGP 15.75bn, compared to EGP 15.2bn during Q1 of this year.
According to the report of the MCIT, the sector’s GDP increased by 10.3% during Q2 of this year compared to the same period last year. The contribution of the ICT sector in the GDP increased from 3% in Q1 in 2017 to 3.3% Q2 of the same year.
The report also revealed that the contribution of the ICT sector to the country’s GDP declined by 12.1% in 2015 from 12.9% compared to 2014.
The number of fixed-line subscribers increased by 6.1% compared to the same period last year, according to the MCIT. The number of fixed-line users increased from 6.2 million to 6.6 million compared to January 2017. The number of fixed-line subscribers increased by 3.6% compared to February 2017, with the number of subscribers in January reaching 6.38 million.
The fixed-line penetration rate was 7.3% in February, compared to 7.2% during the same period of 2016. Fixed-line subscribers accounted for 89% of the total subscribers, commercial subscribers accounted for 9%, and the government sector reached 2%.
The number of mobile subscribers increased by 4.5% during the month of February compared to the same period of 2016. According to the report, the number of mobile subscriptions increased from 94.6 million in February last year to 98.8 million in February 2017.
