For the first time in Egyptian theatres, the drama film “Gawaa’ Kalbak” (Starve Your Dog) is screened on Sunday in Zawya, after the film’s first participation in Egypt’s Luxor African Film Festival (LAFF) where it won the African Federation for Cinematographic Critic Award.
The Morrocan film, directed Hicham Lasri, has gained several awards in different international Film festivals including the Best Director Award at the Khouribga African Film Festival (FCAK) in Morocco. It was also screened in other festivals including the 14th Béjaïa Film Meetings in Algeria.
The dramatic masterpiece portrays the current social circumstances of Morocco of where humanity has no place compared to opportunism, and where ethics no longer have a place.
Through viewing the life Driss Basri as the Moroccan interior minister violating human rights and destroying countless lives under the umbrella of saving the country’s general security, Lasri presents the dark side of injustice Arab regimes.
Despite believing that his actions are against his ethics and his human nature, Basri continues doing them believing that they are valid for the sake of the nation’s greater interest.
Starring Benaissa El Jirari and Latefa Ahrrare, the film also tackles the differences in people’s image of political figures at different eras and regimes.
The special premier lasts only for one day.
“Starve Your Dog” is the third part of Lasri’s trilogy, that tackle Morocco’s social and political scene. The three films, They Are the Dogs, The Sea Is Behind, and Starve Your Dog have been taking part in the Dubai International Film Festival for three consecutive time now, in addition to the critical acclaim and the several awards and honours they have garnered.
