President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi asserted Egypt’s keenness on achieving Palestinian reconciliation and return of the legitimate authority to assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, during his meeting with the president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), Ronald Lauder, on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Directorate Khaled Fawzy and WJC Adviser for Middle East Affairs Thaer Mukbel and included discussions over regional issues, efforts to counter terrorism, and bilateral relations.
Last week, Hamas and Fatah signed an agreement at the Egyptian General Intelligence Service headquarters in Cairo and agreed to proceed with further meetings between factions to plan presidential and legislative elections.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Tuesday that the Israeli government will not recognise the reconciliation, but will not work on hindering it, adding that still will not cut off contacts with the Palestinian Authorities.
The minister clarified in his statement that main issue of not carrying political negotiations Palestinian authority is the presence of Hamas that is labeled as terrorist organisations, and its goals aimed at the destruction of Israel.
Later in September, Hamas announced dissolving its administrative committee in the Gaza Strip, in order to end the escalation with Fatah, which President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas belongs to. According to the agreement, Hamas should allow the reconciliation government to carry out its duties in the 360 square kilometre strip.
