Mohamed Emara, general director of Bahya Foundation for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, said that Bahya received more than 7,000 cases in 2016 and that it is expected to double that number to 14, 000 cases by the end of 2017.
In addition, he said that the number of visits to the surgery clinic has so far reached 15,216 this year, compared to 14,405 visits last year.
This came during the seminar held on the sidelines of the celebration of the world month to raise awareness of breast cancer, and it was organised by Juhayna, the official sponsor of Bahya.
Emara added that the number of surgeries performed in 2017 amounted to 997 surgeries, compared to 983 in 2016. The number of visits for radiation therapy reached 1,227, compared to 852 last year.
“The number of chemical sessions reached 8,785 this year, while it was 7,691 in the previous year; and the number of visits to the oncology clinic reached 18,588 visits in 2017, compared to 17,337 in 2016,” he said.
He stressed that early detection makes the recovery rate 98%, pointing out that many studies have shown that family support leads to an improvement in the patient’s psychological state and health.
In the same context, Bassant Fouad, Head of external relations at Juhayna, said that the statistics reflect the increase in men’s donations to Bahya this year.
Furthermore, Fouad pointed out that the number of male donors in the first quarter (Q1) of this year reached 37% of total donors, and the amount of their contributions represents 58% of the total value of donations received by the hospital.
Meanwhile, in Q2, the number of male donors was 34%, contributing 33% of the total value of donations, while the number of male donors in Q3 was 35%, contributing 41% of the total donations received by the hospital.
On the sidelines of the seminar, Tamer Shawkii, Bahya’s chairperson, told Daily News Egypt that the cost of operating the hospital is EGP 80m per year and that the hospital can receive more cases if the financial support increases.
He pointed out that the hospital needs EGP 240m to be fully operated.
Meanwhile, Emara told Daily News Egypt that the most common type of cancer among women is breast cancer, while the most common one among men is lung cancer.
He added that the best way to protect yourself from cancer is to change your lifestyle, practice sports, drink water, stop drinking soft drinks, and stop smoking.
