Egypt wins world championships in weightlifting and squash

Karim Abdel Gawad defeated his English opponent with 2-0 at the final round

Egyptian weightlifter Mohammed Ihab won the golden medal in the World Weightlifting Championships taking place in United States on Saturday, becoming the first Egyptian in 66 years to make the achievement. Ihab, 28, competed in the men’s 77 kilogram category and secured three golden medals for Egypt.

He previously broke African, Arab, and Egyptian records at the World Weightlifting Championships by winning bronze at the competition in 2015 and also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Ihab participated with four other Egyptian players in the championships who are Ahmed Saad, RagabAbd El-Hai, Sara Samir, and Shaimaa Khalaf.

Meanwhile, squash player Karim Abdel Gawad won the World Squash Championships after defeating his English opponent in the final round of the tournament that took place in France.

His win marks the fourth time Egypt won the championships in its history, after winning in the years 1999, 2009, and 2011.
