Reigning titleholders Borussia Dortmund are knocked out of German Cup after suffering a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, with goals from Jerome Boateng and Thomas Müller. Recap the action here.As it happened:
GUTE NACHT! That concludes our coverage of the German Cup Round of 16 tie between Bayern and Dortmund. It was fun. It was frantic. In the end though, it’s Bayern who add an extra present under their Christmas at the end of a turbulent year by their standards. Thanks for joining me! for now here are some thought from Jerome Boateng:
“We were clearly the better team in the first half. We didn’t give them a sniff whilst creating plenty of clear-cut chances for ourselves. We just have to score more goals – one or two more at least. We should have put this game to bed in the first half. It’s natural though that we were a little tired, but we can now go into the winter break with a good feeling.”
Jerome Boateng on Bayern’s win.
FULL TIME! It’s fair to say it was a completely different game after the half-time break, but Dortmund shouldn’t need a half to get into a game like this. They were outclassed in the first half.
FULL TIME! It certainly didn’t disappoint!
FULL TIME! An extra stocking stuffer for the Bayern big wigs perhaps?
FULL TIME! Questions do need to be asked of Dortmund’s performance in the first half.
FULL TIME! BAYERN 2-1 DORTMUND The reigning titleholders are knocked out as Bayern book their place in the quarter finals of the German Cup. Jerome Boateng and Thomas Müller put the hosts in a commanding position at the break. Bayern took their foot of the pedal, allowing Dortmund to pull a goal back through Andriy Yarmolenko, but BVB’s late efforts weren’t enough to take the tie to extra time.
90+2′ – WHAT A CHANCE! The substitute Alexander Isak has a chance to level the scores, but sees his shot blocked by Jerome Boateng and bobble behind for a corner. He did everything right there the youngster, but the corner comes to nothing.
90+1′ – Dortmund have possession in Bayern’s half, but with the hosts getting every man behind the ball there’s little time or space to work with. It’s going to take am moment of individual brilliance you feel.
90′ – Robert Lewandowski runs the ball out of play and we’ve got FOUR minutes of time added on. Is there a late twist in the tale for Dortmund?
88′ – Jeremy Toljan is brought off to be replaced by Alexander Isak. A striker for a defender. Peter Stöger is going for it!
86′- CHANCE! Christian Pulisic sparks a counter before picking out Andre Schürrle on the opposite flank. Jeremy Toljan runs the overlap, but Schürrle fizzes an effort just wide of the far post. That was close!
84′ – This game was one-way traffic in Bayern’s favour for so long, it seems bizarre that Dortmund are now pushing forward with a chance of keeping their German Cup hopes alive. Bayern need to be careful as they’re inviting a lot of pressure at present.
82′ – Corentin Tolisso’s late run into the box is picked out by Kingsley Coman’s pass. The Frenchman squares for Thomas Müller, whose effort on the turn is blocked behind for a corner.
80′ – Jeremy Toljan chances his arm from range, but drags his effort wide. The reaction amongst Bayern’s players after that shot suggests they’re not happy with how many chances Dortmund are creating.
79′ – Pulisic just got the better of Kimmich one-on-one, but over the course of the game it’s Bayern’s man who has won the battle…
77′ – GOAL! BAYERN 2-1 DORTMUND Bayern’s complacency proves costly as Dortmund reduce the arrears. Shinji Kagawa clips the ball into the danger area where Andriy Yarmolenko beats David Alaba to the ball to plant a header beyond Sven Ulreich. Bayern’s keeper got a touch, but couldn’t keep it out. Game on?
76′ – It’s actually James Rodriguez that makes way for the Frenchman. Boateng looks to be ok to continue for now, but isn’t moving freely at the back.
75′ – It looks like Jerome Boateng has picked up a knock. Felix Götze is on the bench, but it’s Corentin Tolisso who is ready to come on.
74′ – A counter turns into a corner for Dortmund, but the delivery fails to beat the Joshua Kimmich at the near post…
70′ – Dortmund are starting to throw caution to the wind as we enter the closing stages of the game. A goal for the visitors could make things interesting, but they’re leaving a lot of space in behind, which is never the best idea against Bayern.
68′ – CHANCE! Yarmolenko flits into a pocket of space out wide to whip a ball into the box. Somehow, Shinji Kagawa gets in between Jerome Boateng and Niklas Süle to get his head to the ball, but doesn’t get enough power behind the chance to trouble Sven Ulreich.
66′ – Yarmolenko gets to the byline by shimmies and shakes for too long, allowing Bayern to recover their position and put the ball our for a corner, which falls at Schürrle’s feet, but comes to nothing in the end.
65′ – Again Roman Bürki comes to Dortmund’s rescue. The Swiss keeper got a vital touch on Thomas Müller’s square ball to prevent it finding Robert Lewandowski or Kinglsey Coman, who were both ghosting in at the far post.
63′ – Dortmund break down the other end with Andriy Yarmolenko. The Ukrainian does well to keep hold of the ball on the edge of the area, but squares to Andre Schürrle who was in an offside position. BVB just can’t get anything right tonight.
61′ – Franck Ribery doesn’t look happy as he’s replaced by Kinglsey Coman, but is quickly calmed by a few words from Jupp Heynckes.
60′ – At 2-0 down, this game isn’t out of Dortmund’s reach. The only reason that’s the case is because Roman Bürki has been in sensational form, but they need to do much, much more in the final half an hour to stand a chance of reaching the quarter finals.
58′ – Shinji Kagawa battles away on the byline, but comes away empty-handed as Bayern get a goalkick. A meaningless moment that sums up their evening so far.
56′ – Not much to report from the last two minutes on account of Dortmund enjoying more possession, but struggling to figure out a way to break Bayern down in the final third. Andre Schürrle is coming on for Raphael Guerreir. Lets see if that helps!
51′ – Raphael Guerreiro tries whipping a cross in and sees it blocked by Joshua Kimmich. Dortmund appeal for a handball, but see their protests waved away correctly.
50′ – CHANCE! Roman Bürki makes another spectacular save. David Alaba gets to the byline and clips the ball towards the back post where Thomas Müller latches onto the cross. Bürki sticks out a leg to deny the German international from close range as Dortmund survive another scare thanks the Swiss keeper. He’s arguably the only Dortmund player that has turned up tonight.
48′ – Bayern throw men forward, but a misplaced pass gives Dortmund a chance to break. However, just like in the first half, the move comes to nothing as a sloppy pass from Mahmoud Dahoud stops BVB in their tracks.
46′ – We may have an early answer to that question as Roman Bürki is forced into making a fine reflex save to deny Franck Ribery with just over a minute played in the second half.
SECOND HALF! BAYERN 2-0 DORTMUND We’re back underway at the Allianz Arena. Can Dortmund bounce back or will Bayern continue to have their way with Die Schwarz-Gelben?
HALF TIME! Now we just need more of them right?
HALF TIME! Look away now Dortmund fans!
HALF TIME! Did Peter Stöger get it wrong?
HALF TIME! BAYERN 2-0 DORTMUND – The scoreline suggest it hasn’t been much of a contest and, other than a glorious chance that way spurned by Andriy Yarmolenko, that would be a fair assesment. Dortmund improved after a tactical change, but still fell further behind before the break. The mountain BVB have to climb in Bavaria just got a lot steeper.
42′ – Seriously?
40′ – GOAL! BAYERN 2-0 DORTMUND – Bayern double their advantage as Thomas Müller is played into the channel at the end of a sweeping move. The German international still has work to do from a tight angle, but a moment of ingenuity sees him lift the ball over Roman Bürki to deal another blow to Borussia’s confidence before half-time. Sensational finish from Müller.
39′ – Dortmund have been more courageous since the tactical switch to a four-man backline. Shinji Kagawa now looks to be playing as a false nine with Yarmolenko and Pulisic peeling off of him on either side.
36′ – CHANCE! Just like that Dortmund almost level the scores. A Dortmund delivery isn’t dealt with by Bayern’s backline and falls kindly for Andriy Yarmolenko. The Ukrainian keeps his cool, but sees his effort cleared off the line by David Alaba. What a moment!
35′ – Marc Bartra’s night is cut short as the Spaniard is replaced by Mahmoud Dahoud. No sign of an injury, so it seems Stöger has given up on the five-man backline.
34′ – Having taken the pace out of proceedings, Bayern are starting to turn the screw again as we approach half time, which doesn’t bode well for Dortmund given how the opening quarter of an hour went.
32′ – Franck Ribery and David Alaba are giving Dortmund real problems on the left wing. Those two have such a phenomenal understanding between themselves, no wonder it’s hard for defenders to keep tabs on them both.
30′ – Wasteful. The visitors have a chance to break on the counter, but when Sokratis plays a pass behind Jeremy Toljan the move breaks down in midfield drawing groans from the travelling fans. It’s those moments that Dortmund need to make count tonight.
26′ – Dortmund are finally enjoying some extended spells of possession and are keeping Bayern guessing with their movement on and off the ball. Nevertheless, Sven Ulreich remains a bystander and has been about as busy as the man selling alcohol-free beer at the Allianz Arena.
24′ – Not the smartest way to pick up the first booking of the game.
23′ – Andriy Yarmolenko and Christian Pulisic are playing as a front two when Dortmund don’t have possession. Both are trying to put pressure on Bayern’s backline. Both are failing.
22′ – It seems Jerome Boateng has a thing for home soil…
20′ – Dortmund want to counter, but aren’t seizing the opportunities when presented with them. The space is there, they just need to demonstrate more composure in picking their passes.
18′ – The pressure being applied by tonight’s hosts is relentless. They’re combining to great effect, teasing Dortmund with the ball and imposing their will on the game.
16′ – Dortmund are barely getting a touch of the ball here. Peter Stöger may need to consider mixing things up because at this rate Bayern are going to cruise into the German Cup quarter finals.
13′ – BAYERN 1-0 DORTMUND! No real surprise here as Bayern break the deadlock. Niklas Süle’s meets James Rodriguez’s free-kick only to see his header tipped onto the bar by Roman Bürki. However, Jerome Boateng is on hand to head home the rebound, giving Bayern the lead they deserve having dominated proceedings so far. They’ve looked a class above.
11′ – Bayern are putting on a show in the opening exchanges. There’s no other way to put it. The German record titleholders are toying with BVB and carving out chances for fun, but will be disappointed not to be in front as Franck Ribery draws the next save out of Roman Bürki before Robert Lewandowski fires wide with an acrobatic follow up.
10′ It looks like it’s actually Christian Pulisic and not Andriy Yarmolenko operating as the lone striker for Borussia Dortmund. right now neither are getting any service going forward though as Bayern have had a stranglehold on the encounter so far.
8′ Roman Bürki makes an outstanding save to keep the scores level. Arturo Vidal’s snapshot from the edge of the area is collected by Robert Lewandowski, but with Jeremy Toljan playing him onside, the Pole couldn’t get the better of BVB’s custodian from close range.
5′ – Dortmund’s defending is looking a little desperate as a tame delivery into the area finds James Rodriguez, who sees his first-time effort blocked. Bayern have made a very strong start to the game and BVB need to match their level soon or risk falling behind.
3′ – Bayern carve out the first chance of the game as Arturo Vidal sees his glancing header come back off the woodwork! Some suspect defending there from Dortmund.
KICK-OFF! It’s game on at the Allianz Arena. I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of many better ways to go into the Christmas period than with a do-or-die cup tie between the two heavyweights of German football. Will Bayern or Dortmund have something extra to celebrate during the festive period? And will Der Klassiker need penalties to be decided as it did in the German Cup final in 2016?
20:43 – Michael Ballack is in attendance ladies and gentlemen! I wonder what the former Bayern man will make of tonight’s clash?
20:40 – “We’ve got enough quality to cope with the situation, but of course [Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang] is a great player who can decide games on his own.”
Dortmund head coach Peter Stöger on the absence of the Gabon international.
20:35 – Is anyone else starting to get that ‘cup night feeling’? We’re just 10 minutes away from kick-off now!
20:33 – Bayern have already gotten one up on Dortmund this season after claiming a 3-1 win at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Matchday 11. Arjen Robben, Robert Lewandowski and David Alaba all got their names on the scoresheet before Marc Bartra grabbed a stunning consolation effort. As for the clash back in November 2000…
20:28 – Dortmund beat minnows Rielasingen-Arlen 4-0 and third-tier Magdeburg 5-0 to reach the Round of 16 in the German Cup. You have to go back seven seasons for the last time Die Schwarz-Gelben failed to reach the quarter finals of the competition. On that occasion they suffered a shock defeat on penalties against third-tier Kickers Offenbach. Tonight’s encounter is a somewhat different prospect, especially without the club’s top goalscorer.
20:22 – New Dortmund head coach Peter Stöger has never beaten Bayern in his coaching career, but he’s also never had a squad like BVB’s at his disposal against the German record titleholders. The question is: will it make a difference tonight?
20:15 – We’re half an hour from kick-off at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have won the DFB Cup a record 18 times, beating four-time winners Dortmund in the final on three occasions, but it was BVB, who recorded a 3-2 semi-final win over Bayern en route to lifting the trophy last season.

Jupp Heynckes makes four changes to the side that beat VfB Stuttgart on the weekend as Mats Hummels, Rafinha, Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman make way for Niklas Süle, David Alaba, Thomas Müller and Franck Ribery.
19:45 – TEAM NEWS: BORUSSIA DORTMUND
The BIG news out of the BVB camp is that star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been ruled out of the tie with a hip injury. It looks like Andriy Yarmolenko will be the player tasked with leading the line in his absence.
