The Electricity Observatory of the Egyptian Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) announced on Sunday that Egypt had 8,150 MW of surplus electricity production, while the maximum consumption during nights reached 24,090 MW.
According to the ERA, Egypt has not witnessed power outages recently, except in a few areas for short periods that did not exceed five minutes, due to maintenance programmes at stations and production units.
Sources from the Ministry of Electricity noted that the consumption rates in the winter are lower than the summer when consumers intensively use fans and air conditioners. Electricity consumption did not increase in the winter, despite the tendency of some consumers to use electric heaters.
The sources pointed out that a number of consumers tend to ration their consumption of electricity to reduce bills.
Ministry of Electricity Spokesperson Ayman Hamza said that the ministry seeks to secure all the electricity needs of consumers and aims to improve the quality of service.
He noted that Egypt’s electricity reserves and power projects underway will help the country export its electricity surplus to a number of countries, including Saudi Arabia. Hamza said that Egypt is currently negotiating with Jordan to increase exchanging electricity capacities and implement an electricity linkage with Libya.
