A police general from the Security Directorate of Daqahliya survived an assassination attempt as his convoy was attacked by masked assailants on Tuesday night, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.
No injuries were reported, and the attackers fled the scene after the ambush. A security source told Al-Ahram that the assailants were riding on a motorbike and targeted the convoy of the general as he was leaving the directorate on the way to his home. The source added that they used machine guns to execute the attack.
The Ministry of Interior has not released a statement on the incident.
Targeting police and army personnel has been a common strategy for militants in the last years, leading to dozens of deaths.
The most high-profile assassination was the assassination of Police Colonel Wael Tahoon in 2015, when he was shot dead in his car in April by unknown assailants in front of his house in the district of Ain Shams. A conscript accompanying him in the car was also killed in the shooting.
