Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said Monday that Yemen is living its worst days in its history as a result of the deteriorating situation in the country and the spread of terrorism.
Shoukry added during his speech before the meeting of foreign affairs ministers of the Coalition for Supporting Legitimacy in Yemen, that the aim of the meeting is to renew commitment to ease the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, especially amid the outbreak of diseases and the decrease in food in the country.
Egypt has delivered two aid packages to the Yemeni people through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, and is preparing of a third set of aid which includes food and drugs and is increasing the number of Egyptian scholarships for Yemenis, Shoukry said.
He added that Egypt has taken several measures to facilitate Yemenis’ entry to Egypt and offer medical support for the Yemeni people.
Shoukry also pointed to “the positive role of the forces of the coalition in facilitating food and medical aid entering Yemen,” adding, “what we can do is to decrease the impact of damage and treat those impacts but not cure the disease itself.”
The minister also said that the only way to end the suffering in Yemen is through diplomacy and political solutions based on international agreements according to the UN Resolution 2216 and the Gulf Initiative, as well as national Yemeni dialogue.
Shoukry further explained that the crisis in Yemen is not a result of natural disasters but is due to one party wanting to rule the whole country, supported by a regional power.
