A report issued by the Damietta Port Authority (DPA) showed an increase of 23.4% in the number of ships at the port in December 2017 compared to December 2016. According to the report, the number of ships docked at Damietta port increased to 258 in November compared to 209 ships a year prior.
The report indicated an increase of dry bulk ships by 47%, increasing from 55 ships in December 2016 to 81 ships in December 2017, while special nature vessels also increased by 60%, rising from 5 in 2016 to 8 in 2017.
According to the report, the volume of cargo handled at the port increased by 27% compared to the same period of 2016. The volume of cargo handled by the port reached 3.6m tonnes in December 2017 compared to 2.8m tonnes in December 2016.
The report showed a clear growth in exports of general cargo by 63% during December compared to the same period of 2016. The volume of exported goods increased from 556,000 tonnes in December 2016 to reach 903,000 tonnes in December 2017, an increase of 347,600 tonnes.
The number of containers increased by 27% from December 2016 to December 2017, increasing from 283,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2016 to reach 359,000 TEUs in December 2017.
Exported containers also increased by 47% in December last year to score 54,200 TEUs, compared to 37,000 TEUs in December 2016, while imported containers rose by 37.8% in the same period to 54,000 TEUs, up from 39,000 TEUs.
