The number of internet users who visit or have social media accounts in Egypt as of January 2018 is 40%, according to data published by Statista market research company.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the highest penetration rate, 99%, while South Korea and Singapore came in second and third places, at 84% and 83% respectively.

The data released by Statista compares the number of active accounts on the top social network in each country to the population.

Moreover, the report indicates that social media usage has also become increasingly mobile, in large part thanks to social networking smartphone applications.

Earlier in August 2017, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology announced that internet users in Egypt increased by 7 million, to reach 33.19 million in April 2017, compared to 26.19 million in the same period in 2016.

According to the ministry, high-speed internet ADSL subscribers increased to 4.57 million in April 2017, compared to 4.05 million in April 2016. Meanwhile, the proportion of mobile phone data users reached 33.22% in April 2017, up from 27.37% in April 2016.
