On January 12 2018, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued its quarterly bulletin on cotton for the first quarter of the agricultural season 2017/2018.

Exports of cotton from Egypt reached 128,300 kantars (equal to 99.05 pounds, or 45.02 kilograms) in September to November 2017, versus 202,500 kantars during the same period of the previous season, a decline of 36.7%, according to data from the CAPMAS.

This decrease is attributed to a decrease in cotton production in the previous season.

The total amount of cotton consumed domestically reached 44,500 kantars from September to November 2017, against 107,000 kantars during the same period of the prior season, a decline of 58.4%. The CAPMAS attributed this decline in domestic cotton consumption to the closure of some ginneries.
