The number of vehicles owned by governmental companies and public transport authorities reached 8,900 vehicles in 2016/2017, including 2,800 air-conditioned vehicles and 6,100 ordinary buses, compared to 8,800 vehicles in 2015/2016, marking an increase of 0.5%, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).
On Sunday, the CAPMAS issued its annual bulletin on public passenger transportation inside and outside cities in 2016/2017.
The number of routes affiliated with authorities, companies, and public transport facilities reached 2,300 routes in 2017/2016, compared to 2,500 lines in 2015/2016, a decrease of 8.3% due to some facilities shutting down.
Those routes extended over 273,900 km in 2016/2017, compared to 305,300 km in 2016/2015, a decrease of 10.3%.
Moreover, the CAPMAS stated that the number of metro lines remained three in 2016/2017, unchanged from the year before, with the same distance of 76 km.
Meanwhile, railway trains operated on 52 lines in 2016/2017, the same as the year before, which extend over 7,100 km.
Furthermore, the CAPMAS indicated that commuter traffic on public transport inside and outside cities totalled 2.17 billion riders in 2016/2017, up from 2.16 billion in 2015/2016, growing by 0.4%.
This includes 44.8% taking buses and minibuses, 40.7% taking metro lines, 11.2% riding trains, and 3.3% using other public transport vehicles.
In terms of national routes, traffic amounted to 164,300 passengers in 2016/2017 compared to 128,800 passengers in 2015/2016, an increase of 27.6%, while the highest number of passengers was reached on the Cairo-Nuweiba route, which saw the movement of about 76,100 passengers.
