Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi congratulated on Sunday his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on his re-election for a new presidential term, Egyptian presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady said.
“Al-Sisi has congratulated China’s President Xi Jinping on his re-election to a new presidential term, wishing him full success, and for the Chinese people more progress and prosperity,” the statement read. It also added that Al-Sisi has praised the strength of Egyptian and Chinese relations as well as their efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation.
China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, unanimously approved on Saturday the reappointment of Xi as president without term limits, after a provision of the constitution was recently amended to remove a two-term limit. The 64-year-old became president in 2013 and has not said how many additional terms he intends to serve.
Meanwhile, Egyptians abroad concluded voting for president on Sunday, while polling in Egypt are set to take place from 26-28 March. Al-Sisi is effectively guaranteed to secure a second term, as he faces a sole little-known challenger, head of El-Ghad party, Moussa Mostafa Moussa.
