President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi headed on Saturday to Dammam, Saudi Arabia to attend the 29th Arab League Summit, which is scheduled to kick off on Sunday.
The summit, titled Arab Reunification, will discuss several issues that will be at the forefront of discussions, including the situations in Palestine and Syria, as well as the Libyan crisis and the issue of alleged Iranian interference in Arab affairs.
The leaders of the Arab countries will also discuss other regional and international issues, including advancing efforts to counter armed extremists in the region.
During the past week, alleged chemical attacks were directed against the Douma suburb in eastern Ghouta, near Damascus, and Homs, which resulted in the death of dozens. In response, the US, France, and the UK fired joint military strikes against targets associated with Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.
In Palestine, protests continued for the third week under the title Great Return March, which was met by heavy retaliation by Israeli forces that resulted in the killing about 50 people.
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit sent an official invitation to Doha to take part in the Arab Summit. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said that the issue with Qatar will not be part of the meeting’s discussions.
The crisis with Qatar has been ongoing for 10 months so far, as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain boycotted the Gulf nation last June over accusations of supporting terrorism.
