Egyptian football clubs, mainly Al Ahly and Zamalek, whose players will join their national teams will make significant gains from the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the clubs whose players joined their national teams did not get any returns, as the allocations were limited to football unions. The FIFA Council announced that the total contributions for these clubs will amount to $209m, up from $70m in the previous edition in 2014.
In order to be eligible to receive a share of the benefits of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, clubs had to fill and sign an application and send it to FIFA by 30 November 2017 at the latest.
Payments for the 2018 FIFA World Cup shall be calculated as follows:
The total number of players selected for all the representative teams participating in the competition is 736 (23 players in each team). On a cumulative basis, the players will participate in the competition for a total of approximately 24,500 days (starting two weeks before the opening match until the day following the last match of the representative team.
The distribution amount ($209m gross) is divided by the total number of days (24,500), which results in about $8,530 per player (prior to any taxes and deductions).
The amount of $8,530 is multiplied by the number of days each player is at the competition, starting two weeks before the opening match until the day following the last match of his representative team. It is not relevant whether or not the player actually plays in any given match. The total per player is distributed on a pro rata basis to the clubs with which the player was registered during the two years before the day following the last match of his representative team at the competition.
In case of ambiguity regarding the above calculation, FIFA shall decide on the payment and allocation on a case-by-case basis and its decision shall be final.
