Khalid Zahran, head of the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety (EAFMS), said that the International Maritime Organisation is likely to improve Egypt’s classification from C to A in the coming period. He said this comes in light of Egyptian ports’ improvements and their adhering to international standards, ensuring the safety of shipping lines, vessels, and grants confidence to foreign partners.
Egypt maintained its C classification during the IMO membership elections from 2017 through to 2020.
IMO membership is classified into categories A, B, or C. Countries obtain the classification based on number of ports, their efficiency, and commitment to the IMO’s policies.
The term of membership is three years, then countries are re-elected and evaluated.
Zahran pointed to the adoption of some decisions that contribute to the activity of maritime transport for the first time in Egypt, such as the ministerial decision on the organisation of recovering sunken ships issued a week ago, which was accepted by some foreign countries that requested information about the work that can be completed under the resolution.
Zahran highlighted the upcoming issuance of the Egyptian diving code, after more than two years in the study of international codes, in the coming weeks. The code will organise the diving process instead of codes being different according to various diving schools.
