A student accused of leaking secondary education (thanaweya amma) exams to students via social media in return for money was arrested on Wednesday. The Zagazig Prosecution on Saturday officially ordered his detention.
The defendant is being detained for four days pending investigations. According to the investigations, which were published by media outlets, the defendant is a student at Al-Azhar University. He is accused of running a social media page on Facebook where he promised students to leak the exams for them in exchange for mobile credit. He denied the allegations.
The arrest took place as the ministry discovered that several of this year’s final exams have reportedly been leaked, including the Arabic, economy and statistics, and French exams.
The thanaweyya amma exam leaks have put the Ministry of Education under increasing pressure, raising more and more questions about Egypt’s education system, which many are calling to change.
Following similar leaks last year, a law was issued by presidential decree in October that stipulates a fine of no less than EGP 20,000 and no more than EGP 50,000 for exam leakers, and/or jail time of no less than a year.
