Shoukry arrives in Beijing, holds talks, interviews ahead of eighth ministerial meeting of Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Sunday arrived in Beijing, China to attend the eighth ministerial meeting of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum, which is set to be held on Tuesday 10 July.

Shoukry is to hold several meetings with top Chinese officials, as well as interviews with Chinses media, during his two-day visit, including an interview, which has already been done with Phoenix Television.

China’s visit further includes expected bilateral meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan on enhancing political and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Next Tuesday, Shoukry will attend the eighth ministerial meeting, which is expected to include other Arab ministers, as well as Chinese top officials and ministers.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s spokesperson, Ahmed Abu Zeid, on Sunday asserted in televised statements the significance of Chinese investments in Egypt, especially its projects in the New Administrative Capital and Suez Canal.

Abu Zeid further said that both countries are keen on enhancing economic and political cooperation, aiming at serving common interests.

The Chinese direct investments in Egypt are just under $7bn, Han Bing, an economic counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Egypt, told Daily News Egypt on 4 June. Bing added that Chinese financial institutions injected $5bn into the Egyptian financial market during the past two years.

Furthermore, the embassy’s latest statistics suggested that bilateral trade exchange with Egypt witnessed an increase by 26% during the first quarter of 2018 compared to the same period last year, reaching $2.8bn.
