The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) revealed on Wednesday on the occasion of World Population Day, which is held on 11 July annually, that the number of Egypt`s population increased to reach 96.3 million at the beginning of 2018.
The CAPMAS revealed that the population number increased from 72.8 million in 2006 (last census) to reach 76.1 million at the beginning of 2009.
Then it increased at the beginning of 2017 to reach about 94.8 million, before it increased again by 1.5 million in the beginning of 2018 to reach 96.3 million.
On the other hand, the world population reached 7.5 billion on 15 July 2017, according to the Population Reference Bureau of Washington. Meanwhile, 1.3 billion live in more developed countries.
On the other hand, “6.3 billion live in less developed countries; also 54% of world’s population live in urban areas,” according to the Population Reference Bureau of Washington.
On a separate note, the world natural increase rate was 1.2% in 2017, and it declines in more developed countries as it doesn’t exceed 0.1% in some of these countries, while it rises in the world’s poorest countries to reach 2.5%, so the gap among the most developed countries and poor countries in the field of health and population characteristics increases.
Concerning Egypt, “Cairo is considered the largest governorate in terms of population number, where its population was about 9.7 million, followed by Giza governorate with about 8.8 million in January 2018,” said the CAPMAS.
The CAPMAS explained that the Egyptian society is considered a young one, as those less than 15 years old constitute one-third of the population by 34.2%, while the elderly (65 and above) constituted 3.9% at the beginning of 2018.
Meanwhile, the CAPMAS stated that the percentage of urban population was 42.6% and rural population was 57.4%.
Notably, that the celebration of World Population Day, which started in 1987, when the world’s total population reached 5 billion, in order to draw attention to population issues, particularly population growth, health, education, and poverty reduction.
