The Egyptian youth team for basketball under the age of 18 has managed to win the title in the championship held in Cairo during the period from 15 to 24 July after a heroic performance before Bahrain.

At first, Egypt managed to play better than the Bahraini team, managing to take control by the end of the third round, making the result 50-50 before the team ended the match by a 65-70 result.

The Egyptian team received the cup from Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy, as well as Ismail El Qarqawi, the president of the Arab Federation of Basketball; Abdallah Sahalaby, the secretary general of the federation; and Abdelrahman El Mosaad, the president of the Saudi Federation.

The match reflected the situation of both teams in the championship in which seven countries—Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Sudan, Bahrain, Jordan, and Emirates—participated. The seven teams participated in the tournament, with the top performer being the Bahraini team, and the Egyptian team second. In the third and fourth place came Tunisia and Algeria. In the semi-final, Bahrain beat Algeria, and Egypt beat Tunisia.

Mohamed Fathy, the tournament’s director, told Daily News Egypt that he was very happy about the great praise he received from the participating teams and the availability of all amenities.

Fathy pointed out that the championship was strong, and the competition was intense. He expressed his admiration for the Bahraini team, which played many great matches and was the “black horse” in them. The Sudanese team also made a great appearance when it participated for the first time. He stressed that Egypt’s win in any championship is a must, given that it has qualified cadres in all sectors, as well as an infrastructure ready for any event.

Shalaby expressed his admiration for the technical level of the championship, as well as the competitive spirit of the participating team, stressing that the championship is the best preparation for qualifiers of the 2019 world cup in Asia and Africa, as well as a competition that increases the experience of young players.
