The Egyptian Organisation for Standardisation and Quality (EOS) has adopted 49 new standard specifications for locally and imported vehicles. The new specifications were issued under standard No 8153 of 2018 and aim to improve safety and security conditions for vehicles.
A government source said that the new specifications come in line with Egypt’s accession to the United Nations agreement in 2012 concerning “the adoption of harmonised technical United Nations regulations for wheeled vehicles, equipment, and parts which can be fitted and/or be used on wheeled vehicles and the conditions for reciprocal recognition of approvals granted on the basis of these United Nations regulations.” This agreement, including 143 technical specifications, aims to improve the safety and security conditions of vehicles.
The source added that the EOS formed a committee to discuss the newly issued specifications with car manufacturers, agents, and importers in Egypt.
He pointed out that the new technical specifications meet the minimum requirements for category M1 vehicles.
Moreover, there is no specific timetable for the implementation of the new specifications, especially as they represent the minimum technical requirements for a full vehicle. Therefore, car manufacturers and importers will not be given a period of grace to adjust their conditions.
